1.1. IntroductionThis chapter gives a presentation of the company where the internship project was carried out. The company name O3B NETWORKS means “Other Three Billion”. An estimated three billion people on Earth cannot access the Internet or have very slow Internet connectivity with terrestrial Internet communications. O3B NETWORKS aims to provide connectivity to high-speed Internet and telecommunications services to these three billion people through satellites. O3B NETWORKS was founded by Greg Wyler in 2007 and the company offered a different approach to providing Internet connectivity in today's typical GEO satellite market. A traditional GEO satellite is placed in an orbit at a distance of 3,600 kilometers from the earth while O3B NETWORKS satellites measure only 8,063 kilometers. The shorter distance of an O3B NETWORKS satellite constellation from Earth compared to traditional long-range GEO satellites leads to a low-latency, lower-cost Internet service provider solution. The initial O3B NETWORKS constellation consists of eight identical satellites operating in medium Earth orbit, to which additional satellites can be added to increase service capacity. Four satellites have already been launched and operationally tested and the remaining four are expected to be launched and operational in January 2014. O3B NETWORKS is a very young company compared to other satellite communications service providers. More than 200 people work for O3B NETWORKS and around 50 people work in the Hague office, including engineers and IT department, some of them have worked more than 20 years in the satellite industry.1.2.
