Essay / Food Injustice and Discrimination - 673
Food ScandalImagine a group of people deprived of a specific type of food because of the color of their skin or because they belong to a lower class. Or imagine people not being allowed to enjoy the freedom to grow what they like. This is why food injustice can be seen as a pervasive problem that affects different people. According to the organization Just Food (2010), food justice consists of "communities exercising their right to grow, sell and eat fresh, nutritious, affordable, culturally appropriate and locally grown food with care for the well-being of all.” the land, the workers and the animals. Race and class are two of the factors that lead to food injustice, as people's access to food may be limited based on the color of their skin and social status. Food injustice is a problem that affects the working classes, who are often victims of discrimination. According to Omi and Winant (1994), the food system is implicated in many of what they call racial projects, such as federal immigration laws that discriminate against people based on their right to protected place of residence. work, and urban planning and mortgage policies are also another racial project. as they tend to keep community members of color from accessing high-class, well-educated areas. It is unacceptable that people from the lower classes are subjected to illegal situations, such as being forced to give up their rights to own and manage land for food production. Additionally, race has also played a role in this problem of food injustice. For example, the Karuk people, who once lived a wealthy life and were among the richest tribes of their time. This tribe relies on the Klamath River for its fishing, which is its primary source of food. However, this tribe is now suffering... middle of paper ...... after that this cheap food policy has more costs than expected for the environment and people, so it wasn't really a good solution for this problem, as the use of cheap fertilizers and poor quality crops have led to many environmental problems, regardless of the cheaper price of food produced and industrial costs. Indeed, there are people who believe that food injustice is a minor problem and that they should do it. I don't worry much about it because they can eat whatever they want, but it's not just a question of money or ability, it's rather an injustice, an inequity because it can be tolerated depending on the race, class and power. It may be right that the rich live more comfortably than the poor, but that does not mean that the insignificant, the colored or the working people should not have their rights well respected or, in other words, that their individuals are treated equally..
