    Having dove result after result into Internet searches for advertisements aimed at older people, I came to a stark realization: overall, there are very few . But I found a few advertisements in magazines and on television that spoke volumes about the concept of aging and older people. Some of these advertisements viewed aging in a positive light; showing that even at older ages people can be active and seen in a very popular way by public media. Unfortunately, other ads played on negative stereotypes of aging and older people, particularly with the idea that as you age you are unable to fully care for yourself. The first ad I found was from AARP, showing a silver-haired woman in a red dress. The ad's tagline read: "Most marketers believe consumers die as soon as they turn 50." This statement highlights that older people do not receive the publicity they deserve. I found this interesting since that was the exact conclusion I had reached just moments before. This advertising could be extrapolated to show the stereotypes that older people do not need to be advertised because they are not a profitable population. It may be a widely held belief that as we age, we become more predictable and less accepting of change. Therefore, they are less likely to buy a new or different product and advertisers shouldn't even try. Currently, the ads and commercials seem all aimed at 18-25 year olds who are only interested in hot people, beer, and sports, an interesting phenomenon that was easily visible during my search. The next ad I found was a complement to People magazine. . She was a 48-year-old woman in very good physical shape. The caption reads "BIKINI BODY AT 4 YEARS OLD...... middle of paper...... I found it was for what appears to be a nursing home. It shows four elderly people next to 'a list of nursing home amenities under the caption "Squeezing more out of life." I feel like this ad is an example of two different stereotypes. The first is about the issue of death. "compression" makes it seem like they are fighting to get more, instead of just living happily. This could be an example of the stereotype that older people always have to worry about the end of life and how. they should always be fighting to “get more out of life.” Additionally, just like the previous two ads, nursing homes are a prime example of the stereotype that as you get older you'll need someone to help you. other to take care of you This means that as you get older, it is better to lose your independence and live in a home than to live without help...
