    When I was a kid, I didn't know much about college. None of the adults in my life had gone to college, my family didn't talk about it, and it seemed like a faraway country I only heard about in movies and TV. I was first introduced to college when my third grade class took a field trip to Iowa State University, a clearly necessary excursion given my lack of exposure to higher education. I was immediately amazed by the grand architecture and massive buildings. I had never seen anything like a college campus before. The few things I remember from the trip are that everything was big, the students were playing with us, and we were able to swim in the pool. Although the main purpose of the field trip may have been lost in favor of my childhood excitement of being able to swim in a large pool, the field trip marked the beginning of my teaching knowledge higher and, from that point on, I always viewed it as something I would eventually be a part of, even though it seemed like a very distant future at eight years old. As I grew up, I developed other reasons for wanting to attend college....
