  • Essay / Using Animals in Research and Experimentation - 615

Animals should be used for research and experimentation because if animals become ill or show signs of abnormal action, scientists know that their use is not safe for humans. Animal research has played an important role in almost every medical advancement of the past decade. Animals have the same organ system that performs the same task, which helps determine whether what is being tested is safe for humans. Most medications used by animals use the same medications humans use, such as antibiotics, painkillers, and many more. This makes it possible to see if the drug cures animals without any harmful consequences, then it would be safe and useful for humans. Using animals for research and experimentation has led to a continued increase in cancer survival rates. The use of animals for research and experimentation has helped increase survival rates for many other diseases and conditions. People with diabetes rely on insulin which was developed through experiments on rabbits and dogs. Animals commonly referred to as pets such as dogs and cats represent less than 0.2% of research animals in total. Most research and experiments are done on mice, rats, fish, and birds that are not commonly called pets. Animals usually end up killing more animals each week than the tests and experiments kill each year. All research and experiments must be approved before testing can be carried out and before experiments can begin. The UK has some of the highest laboratory welfare standards in the world. There are legal requirements that limit the number of animals that can be used for testing. Animal research can only be carried out in the UK, where there are no suitable non-animal alternatives. “Animal research... middle of paper ...... to realize that doing the tests can save many lives and can help make daily life easier for some people.
