  • Essay / Observation of Observation in Observation - 1054

For example, in Ms. T's class, students regularly perform group stations. The stations consist of doing math on a computer, writing words on small whiteboards, writing about a specific topic in their journals, and reading individually. Each of these stations is numbered. The students know the number of each station because it is always the same, and they each drew a popsicle stick to tell them where to start. Mrs. T has an alarm that goes off when it's time to change stations. When students make too much noise, she rings a bell, but she will only ring it a certain number of times before group time ends. By setting up the stations early, kids know what they're supposed to do and how it's supposed to work. She also manages their behavior by giving them a bell to keep them quiet. Another example is in Ms. A's class, where students have to raise their hands to speak out loud. She won't recognize them until they raise their hands. Finally, in area two, a teacher must organize their physical space. For example, Ms. A keeps her desk very clean and stores her items in drawers and filing cabinets where she can locate them easily. She also keeps her class as a whole organized. There are shelves all around the room labeled what is there. Some shelves have bins and the bins are labeled. What the labels say exists, it exists. It has a book shelf that students can use, and all the books are neatly arranged so they are easy to use.
