  • Essay / The influence of self-rated body image on...

Research in psychology today seems to be drawn towards particular areas of interest, particularly when it comes to understanding behavior human. One of the most common research topics in social psychology is body image and perceptions related to age groups, genders, and ethnicities. Young people today are under pressure from society to make physical appearance a dominant factor in their daily lives, and this pressure manifests itself not only through the influence of the media, but also through that of friends and family (Pavica, 2010). These pressures can affect many different aspects of a person's life and significantly influence their actions. Aspects affected by body image may include popularity among peers, social comfort, and the attitudes an individual comes to adopt (Lewis & Rosenblum, 1999). Studies on body image in the past have had varying results regarding which groups are affected. affected, as well as the impact of body image on these groups. There has also been much debate about the validity of the methods used to judge body image and the extent to which the measures used actually correlate with participants' actual views on body image (Cash, Morrow, Hrabosky, & Perry 2004). Some factors that led to this gap in responses were questions that were phrased to be more tailored to the attitudes of one gender over another. Early studies on body image focused simply on body shape, which appeared to be more important to women, whereas effects on body image were seen in men when questions of muscle definition were included in the questionnaire process (Ridgeway and Tylka, 2005). hopes to gain a deeper insight into a demographic that is believed to place a high emphasis on body image in the way...... middle of article ......ipong, Paul and Heidi Burkey . “Body mass index and body size perception: a normalization of overweight and obesity among diverse university students.” California Journal of Health Promotion 9.1 (2011): 18-24.
