    Social control theory attempts to explain why we don't all commit crime. Social control theory rose to prominence in the 1960s. Travis Hirschi presented his new theory based on existing concepts of social control. His theory of social control stated that connections to school, family, and other aspects of society serve to mitigate the tendency toward deviant behavior.
