Hypotheses: The situation in which participants are placed will affect their behavior.Participants: The research team offered $15/day in a newspaper ad for a study on the psychology of imprisonment. More than 75 people responded to the ad, but only 24 students were chosen: 12 to play the role of prisoners and 12 to play the role of guards. These students had no history of criminal arrest, health problems, substance abuse, or psychological disorders. Methods: A few years ago, I participated in a study on the psychology of imprisonment. Unexpectedly, the police arrested me at my home. I was handcuffed, searched, read my rights and driven in a police car to the police station. Even though I knew it was an experiment, they made me feel like I had really done something against the law. The judge charged me with burglary. Immediately they gave me a uniform with my ID number written on it. I was forced to wear it without underwear. I felt really humiliated and anonymous. When I entered my cell, I saw that all the guards were wearing identical uniforms. I knew the guards would try to act like real guards, but they took their task too seriously. From the first day, they not only woke us up from sleep in the middle of the night with whistles, but also forced us to do push-ups for no reason. On the second day we decided to revolt. We took off our stocking caps, tore off our numbers, and placed our beds against the door so the clouds wouldn't reach us. We made the guards very angry. They got a fire extinguisher and forced us away from the doors. So they managed to enter every cell. They punished us by stripping each of us naked and removing our beds. Middle of paper rulers......ostile, arbitrary and inventive in their forms of prisoner humiliation, they also fully appreciated the power they wielded. I think I would prefer to be a mix between the fair guards who followed the prison rules and the "good guys" who did small favors for the prisoners and never punished them. Actually, the task was to depict how real guards act, so I don't see the reason why the guards started acting bad. Of course, if they had to deal with killers who cause trouble in their cells like real guards must do, they would have to follow the prison rules, but they should never let boredom drive them into committing pornographic and degrading abuse of prisoners as they did. in this experience. Ultimately, if I were a true guardian, I would never enjoy seeing others suffer; so I don't see the point in the behavior of the chosen volunteers.
