HeroA hero is defined as a person admired for great or courageous deeds or fine qualities (Hero, np). Over time, perceptions and characteristics of what makes a hero have changed. While some characteristics have remained constant, others have evolved and developed as society evolves. One thing that is certain is that most people have their own descriptions and ideas that define a hero. Heroes have high standards to meet. Thousands of people perform heroic acts every day. Does a single heroic act make someone a hero? A hero's values have evolved over time. The Renaissance era introduced many of the common characteristics seen in heroes today, such as strength, intelligence, and courage. During the Romantic era, these characteristics transformed into the value of the arts. Being a hero was about trusting and valuing your feelings. Heroes loved art, literature and music and possessed natural goodness. The heroes of the Romantic era were poets, dreamers and philosophers. The Victorian era established the belief that heroism was a gift and could not be taught as had been suggested in previous eras. People in the Victorian era believed that heroes had greater power and were demigods. In the 19th century, heroism was seen as the ability to help others in times of need, without any expectation of indebtedness to the person being helped. Heroes were generally good people who were helpful in times of need. The 20th century considered all people heroes. People of the century believed that the simple act of living was a biographical legend to be passed down for centuries. The 20th century demeaned the hero and cut him off from military greatness.
