Essay / The 1st University is not the traditional liberal arts university, but the school embraces the liberal arts tradition. As a Christian school, Ouachita also focuses on spiritual growth, as its mission statement says: "Embracing the liberal arts tradition, the university prepares individuals for continued intellectual and spiritual growth, a life of meaningful work and reasoned engagement with the world. » By having us take chapel classes and other religious classes as part of the core, it helps us as Christians grow. As Ostrander also states, "A Christian university seeks to provide an overarching framework that gives meaning and unity to everything from English literature to chapel to intramural football." » Through OBU, students benefit from a well-rounded education by not only taking courses for their majors, but also courses in most subjects. In today's society, this is what Dr. Kagan thinks: “I suggest that schools should include a common core of study for all of their students. This would have many advantages, because it would create an intellectual communion between students and teachers that does not exist today and would encourage the idea that learning and knowledge are good things in themselves” (Donald Kagan). Even if we have a degree, we gain knowledge outside of it and it will help us later in life. An education that involves the liberal arts is valuable because you get a little bit of everything. Personally, I believe it makes you a complete person. You might be an expert in one area and that's great, but even though at OBU you're likely to not only strive in one specific area, you get a little bit of everything. Other schools don't require you to go to chapel, take religion classes, or even classes outside of your major. Another thing about...... middle of paper ...... e a class worth doing homework, I can take a nap or watch Netflix. This should give me some motivation and having to get good grades, because after I graduate I will have my dream job, and that is the goal. My third fear is more complicated than the other two because this one isn't just about school, it's also about life, and in life we make mistakes and sometimes aren't good enough. This is something I have to achieve, and I also have to do my best in everything I do. This will probably be my hardest fear to admit, but it will be the most beneficial for me in the event of a complication. While at OBU, I plan to have fun, but I also plan to receive an education that will last a lifetime. By overcoming my fears and making the most of my core courses, I will learn more than just the content of my degree. I will get an education that I will enjoy for the rest of my life..
