  • Essay / Reintroducing archery into the school curriculum - 1062

Children in American public schools lack the motivation and zeal to learn the current core curriculum. On the other hand, archery is attracting increasing interest among the population of young American citizens. Therefore, the U.S. Department of Education should provide archery training in schools to generate interest and knowledge about archery. As most local archery technicians know, the Hunger Games caused a surge in the number of recurve archers. However, the surge in interest that occurred in the middle of the fall hunting season could be temporary and mimic the effects that Rambo also had on archery (Mennenga). Obeng reports that 62% of primary and secondary school teachers believe there should be firearms training in schools; so why not start, or simultaneously incorporate, recurve and compound bows (394)? Incorporating archery into national curricula would be very beneficial to American schools. Archery is a way to relax during a tedious day of absorbing information in the mind. Additionally, this would not be a waste of time and resources, but rather an opportunity to enhance the existing curriculum by giving students the ability to increase their motor skills and learn valuable history lessons .
