Essay / The performance I attended for the concert review
The performance I attended for the concert review was a senior recital for Teresa Norton and Tracey Barnes. They played the violin and the piano respectively. The concert took place at Goranson Hall and I immediately felt a sense of closeness and intimacy due to the small size of the concert hall, which added to the sentimental value of such a special performance. They performed a total of three pieces, including Fritz Kreisler's Liebesleid, Terzetto in C major, Op. 74 for two violins and viola by Antonín Dvorák and Sonata for violin and piano, No. 17 in C major, K. 296 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Overall, I really enjoyed attending the concert and learning about the Idaho State music department. The opening piece was called “Liebesleid” by Fritz Kreisler and it was a rather short composition, which made an excellent introductory piece. The piece followed late romantic and early modern musical styles and was a duet with the piano and violin. It was very light and had a melody that was very easy to follow and remember. The violinist used several techniques such as vibrato and double playing. The piece is ternary in form and follows the ABA model. I believe it was a homophonic texture with the piano as accompaniment. The work began with a tempo around moderato, but once the “B” section began, it slowed to an andante. The “A” section of the piece evokes a very light and youthful emotion, while the contrasting “B” section depicts much sadder feelings. The dynamics didn't vary too much, but during the "B" section the dynamics dropped down to a piano. The composition showed a similar theme in each section, and I immediately noticed a theme reappearing. I really enjoyed the simplicity of the Li...... middle of paper ......h faster and had an allegro tempo. The very short notes in the violin part gave it a light, more danceable feel than all three. The violin and piano played in unison several times. I found this movement to be the most difficult of the three to follow because I didn't hear much of a recurring theme. The dynamics remained fairly constant between a mezzo piano and a mezzo forte. Overall, I think this composition did a fantastic job of showcasing the talents and abilities of both musicians without overshadowing each other. The senior recital I was lucky enough to attend was absolutely wonderful and I am so glad I had the opportunity to experience it. I would definitely recommend caring for anyone and supporting other ISU students. The musicians did a great job and it made me realize how much dedication and hard work it takes to be a great musician..
