Essay / Loneliness and Ill Health in Solo by Edgar Allan Poe modern crisis, in which we struggle to find our place in society. We now live in a less unified world, the religious, political, social and rich classes have left their mark on us more than ever. The art of integrating into a categorical society is all the more complex as technology takes over our daily lives. Social media is being hailed as an innovation that connects us more closely than ever before, but the result has been quite damaging. Loneliness, in turn, has moved from a stage of life that must be faced to a health-debilitating illness. Human existence revolves around two capacities: one being the capacity to integrate, the other being the capacity to adapt. An internal crisis is brewing between the two capacities; when we cannot fit in, isolation sets in, while failing to adapt ends up being left behind by those around us, leaving the end result as loneliness. Edgar Allan Poe introduces his poem with a somber, chilling words: "Since childhood I have not been / As others were, I have not been / As others have saw, I could not bring”, the integration process never began for someone so disconnected from society. Edgar Allan Poe chose the words, as others did, "I have not been" to imply the struggle to be as society wants one to be, but not having the qualities to fit in, which results in being left out. Later I added the mystery that still binds me, the mystery referring to the conundrum of finding purpose in life and the question of why one was born in the first place, in moments of sorrow and discomfort, loneliness and turmoil, depression and confusion, one questions one's own. exist...... middle of paper ...... cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening illnesses. Although older adults are more likely to develop such illnesses, children are at high risk of anxiety and depression due to being excluded, as a medical journal from the American Academy of Pediatrics points out – “ being bullied or excluded by their peers were the factors most likely to predict whether or not they reported symptoms of depression. “Moving to a personal experience, as I watched my mother slowly succumb to cancer, what I perceived as isolation slowly turned into loneliness. An event that was supposed to bring the family together. knitting only made that connection disappear. As the loneliness took its toll on me, my health took its toll and I was on the verge of contracting type 2 diabetes. At fifteen, who knew I was. loneliness caused such problems to my health.
