More than 1.7 million traumatic brain injuries are reported each year. According to reports, the main causes of brain injuries are falls followed by road accidents and accidents resulting from shock. Falls account for 32.5% of head injuries in the United States. 50% of all brain injuries in children are due to falls. 61% of all head injuries in adults are 65 years or older. Head injuries are very violent blows or shocks to the head or body that result in penetration of the skull. Mild head injuries can cause brief dysfunction of brain cells. Severe brain injuries can cause bleeding, bruising, physical damage to other parts of the body, and tearing of tissue. Brain injuries are more common in men than women.
