They were a very poor family in the late 1800s and did what they could to survive. Because of this, Carl had to drop out of school at the age of thirteen in search of odd jobs. By the time he was seventeen, he was homeless and traveled wherever the trains went. One day he jumped on a train that took him to the other side of the country. After being homeless and poor, he decided to enlist in the military. He immediately served more than eight months in the Spanish-American War after being deported to Puerto Rico.
