  • Essay / Swimmer's Themes, by John Cheever - 1167

Sammy is a nineteen year old teenager and works at the A&P supermarket. He recounts an experience he had the day he left his job at A&P. Sammy can be opinionated, sarcastic and has great observation skills. He notices everything around him, but he particularly notices and describes the three girls who enter the supermarket in swimsuits. It was a normal Thursday afternoon in the summer and very few people entered the store at that time of day. At the end of the story, Sammy quits his job due to the rudeness with which his boss, Lengel, treated these girls. It seems that by quitting his job, Sammy is growing up and standing up for things he considers wrong. On the other hand, he knows that his parents will not be happy that he resigns since they have been friends with Lengel for a very long time.
