Traditionally in this country, marriage has been defined as a religious and legal commitment between a man and a woman. Same-sex relationships are becoming more and more accepted in this country; however, these same-sex couples cannot legally marry, have or adopt children, and are considered a threat to society. Some states have commitment ceremonies called “civil unions,” which constitute marriage without using the word “marriage.” Many heterosexual citizens as well as politicians are against same-sex marriage, but believe that it is up to states to decide. Joe Messerli says, “Many politicians are calling for amendments to their state constitutions. Many areas of the country, such as San Francisco, have performed wedding ceremonies in defiance of the law...the fundamental question is: should we allow same-sex couples to legally marry? » Denying marriage to homosexuals is a violation of religious freedom. The main reason for refusing same-sex marriage is that all major religions consider homosexuality to be a sin. The First Amendment states that a person's religious views should be protected. Joe Messerli says: “The government cannot start legislating just because a religion says so. Next, should we make taking the Lord’s name in vain a criminal activity because Christians consider it a violation of a commandment.” Almost all world religions view homosexuality as unacceptable. It is offensive to most people and a contempt for religious freedom that people are forced to acknowledge a relationship they view as sinful. The laws set forth in the Bible became the legal system of the United States. But why should others care about same-sex marriage? Children will be exposed to a lot of teasing and hatred from their peers, which could harm their development. Evidence shows that family structure matters most and that a child's well-being lies within the intact, biological, married family. Calling same-sex marriage a threat to society is nothing more than discriminatory against two people of the same sex who simply want to be treated equally. Homosexuals should have the same rights as heterosexuals. If two people are in love, whether of the same sex or the opposite sex, they should be allowed to marry. Children can be raised by same-sex couples with the same love and care as children raised by opposite-sex couples. Therefore, cause no harm to the marriage and lifestyle of heterosexuals; same-sex marriage should be legalized giving homosexuals the rights they should have.
