State law vs. Moral LawIf someone's best friend was dying and the only medication to save him was illegal, would it be okay to let him take it even if he broke state law? State law versus moral law has always been a big debate over which side to choose if it comes to doing what someone believes in or what the state considers right. The cause and effect of the characters' choices on their lives results from their strong moral or state beliefs, as shown by the events in the lives of Antigone, Creon, and Ismene. One of the main characters, Antigone, performs actions according to her strong belief in her moral laws and the effects of these actions prove to be a bit harsh. She is acting against the state by continuing to bury her brother when she was clearly advised not to do so. Antigone refuses to listen because she “will not be caught betraying him [Polynices]” in the eyes of the gods (Sophocles 288). Antigone continued her actions, ready to assume the consequences. This shows that she is passionate in her beliefs. Later in the play we hear the terrible news from the mess hall....
