However, even before military manuals, Chinese tales claim that this game could date back to 5000 BCE. Some claim that the true precursor to American football may have been the games of Episkyro and Harpastron played by the ancient Greeks. The goal was to move a ball across a goal line by hitting, throwing, or running with it. Classic literature contains detailed accounts of the game, including its most brutal elements, such as fierce tackling. The name Harpaston (meaning forward pass or forward pass play) comes from the Greek word Harpazein – meaning to throw forward. In this game, the ancient Greeks played on a rectangular field with regular sidelines, a goal line, and a center line (similar to the center line in football). They used forward passes to move the ball. The game was played mainly by men and sometimes by women.
