  • Essay / Hitler and the Victims of Nazi Persecution and Murder

    Starting in 1933, Hitler and his Nazi Party targeted not only those of the Jewish faith but many other groups. Hitler was motivated by religion and nationalism to eradicate any threat to his state. Hitler's ideology was that his Aryan race was superior to any other. Hitler's goal was to create a "master race" by eliminating the ability for "inferiors" to reproduce. Besides Jews, other victims of the genocide include Roma (Gypsies), Afro-Germans, mentally handicapped people, disabled people, Poles, Slavs, anti-Nazi political parties, Jehovah's Witnesses, and homosexuals. In Hitler's eyes, all of these groups had to be eliminated for his dominant race to succeed. According to the Teacher's Guide to the Holocaust, Roma (Gypsies) and Afro-Germans were attacked because of their ethnicity. These two groups fell into the category of “asocial” and too undesirable. Gypsies had pre-existing prejudices against them before Hitler's rise, which he simply expanded upon by creating laws against them. Their civil rights were taken away. Many were deported or sent to forced labor camps and murdered. In 1933, the “Law for the Prevention of Children with Hereditary Defects” came into force, giving doctors and doctors the ability to take away the choice and ability to reproduce from Roma and others. Roma and blacks were considered minorities with “foreign blood”, so they were no longer allowed to marry people of Aryan race (“Sinti and Roma”). The foreign appearance and customs of Gypsies and Afro-Germans were seen as a threat to the "superior" race. They were subject to intense scrutiny and extreme judgment by researchers and scientists. In conclusion, there were many groups other than Jews who were victims of persecution and murder by the Nazis.
