The election of 1824 is one of the most unique and interesting elections in American history. The four candidates for election were William Crawford, Henry Clay, John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. They all belonged to the Jacksonian Republican Party. William H. Crawford was very experienced in politics. Before running for president in 1824, he served as James Monroe's Secretary of War and also as Secretary of the Treasury under Monroe and James Madison. He also served in Congress as a U.S. Senator from Georgia. He served as minister to France from 1813 to 1815. Before the 1824 election, Crawford suffered a stroke and became almost blind. Despite his health, the congressional caucuses chose Crawford as their presidential candidate. This decision proved very unpopular with many states and they decided they were no longer obligated to support the caucus candidate.1 Henry Clay was originally from Virginia but eventually moved to Lexington, Kentucky. In Kentucky, he was elected to the state legislature in 1803 and served there until 1809. After leaving the state legislature, Clay was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1811. Then While in the House of Representatives, he became one of the leaders of the "War Hawks". In 1820, Clay brought the Missouri Compromise.
