  • Essay / Why People Commit Crimes - 734

Growing up as a child can have a big impact on a person later in life. Living in a broken home and not having a parent to guide them can cause a child to do bad things. Not having love or affection sometimes causes children to struggle in school to get the attention they want, and this usually continues in their lives. Because the child does not receive any attention or guidance from an older figure, he or she is more likely to lose track and begin to become involved in dangerous activities (McCord). Sometimes economic problems tend to push a person to indulge in criminal activities. If a person is living in poverty, they are desperate for money and will do anything to earn an income. This includes selling drugs to make money. We may also start shoplifting to bring certain things home because we cannot afford to buy them. Another sociological factor that comes into play is peer decision making. Especially for kids who come from broken homes and don't have much of a support system at home, their friends are very important to them and they tend to listen to everything they say. If a whole group of friends do something bad and one person doesn't do it, then they are being defiant (Tittle). This causes the child to follow the actions of peers and give in to peers.
