The word ergonomics was created by simply combining two Greek words. “Ergo” means work and “nomics” means laws. However, at present, ergonomics refers to the study of the condition of people in their workplace, in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. Ergonomics is a daily concern for us humans, whether at work or at home. Even though ergonomics may not seem like an important factor to consider, it can significantly affect the efficiency of people's work. Maintaining good ergonomics is also very important for people's health and safety. A study proves that prolonged time spent in front of a computer can cause muscle fatigue and discomfort. The most common injuries people suffer from poor ergonomics are often musculoskeletal injuries, also known as MSI. Besides MSI, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are another very common discomfort that people suffer from. This includes, but is not limited to: eye strain, headaches, blurred vision, burning eyes and many more, but the most common and serious MSDs are tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and even muscle tension. The three main reasons people suffer from MSDs are due to constant, repetitive, awkward and forceful movements of the body. These problems will occur due to an inefficient workplace and ergonomics helps us eliminate these potentially dangerous injuries.
