There are four for the field of forensic odontology, the Bureau of Legal Dentistry (BOLD), the American Society of Forensic Odontology (ASFO), the American Board of Forensic Odontology (ABFO) and the International Organization for Forensic Odontology (IOFOS). The American Board of Forensic Odontology (ABFO) has created methodological guidelines, with the goal of reducing discrepancies and increasing the validity of bite mark analysis. They also provide information on how best to collect and preserve evidence, so that potentially useful evidence is not discarded simply because the forensic odontologist's collection methods were unsuitable.
