  • Essay / Theme of Religion in The Handmaid's Tale - 1030

According to the Bible, children were sacred and were considered a gift from God and a state of survival. Since it was rare to have children in Gilead since the wives are too old to have children and the commanders are fertile, Gilead decided to assign a handmaiden to each commander. “We first came face to face five weeks ago, when I first came face to face. arrived at this assignment” (15). Since the wives in the Bible have maidservants, we see that no sin was committed. The Bible itself was written a long time ago and before it was written, the stories in the Bible were passed down orally. The religious book is not entirely reliable since the world is changing and the views of the Bible are opposed to those of modernity.
