Essay / Effects of Video Games on Youth - 864
Excessive playing of video games has been a problem among today's youth, they have had more influence on young people than ever before. This brings to my attention a question: how do video games affect the youth of our society? Excessive playing of video games, especially violent video games, can lead to youth violence, decreased academic achievement, and many other negative things. I realize that some parents believe that they can be good for children, I agree but I also disagree in some cases. Some parents allow their children to play video games to maintain a social life and learn to use strategies. This is true in some cases but not in all cases. For example, other children who play video games alone and are constantly in their rooms may become socially isolated or take the games to a serious enough level to begin using them in real-life situations. Violence among young people caused by video games comes from the fact that: “video games are an ideal environment for learning violence” (Eakes). There are several reasons why violent video games cause our young people to act based on what they see in the video game. For example, Pamela Eakes, founder of Mothers Against Violence in America, mentioned that video games: “place the player in the role of the aggressor and reward them for their violent behavior” (Eakes). This is true because in violent video games you have to fight and kill other players to win the game. Pamela Eakes also said about how violent video games affect the youth of our society that video games: "allow the player to repeat an entire behavioral scenario, from provocation to choosing a violent resolution of the conflict." (Eakes). Video games are becoming more and more realistic rather than staying in the fantasy world of things and they are in the middle of paper...... apart from playing games and doing nothing but eating all day and watching computer screens and play Xbox, you may want to get your kids outside so they aren't socially isolated from the real world.
