Essay / Advantages and Disadvantages of GMO Corn - 922
GMOs are essential parts of society and are consumed daily by billions of people. Unfortunately, the majority of people never ask themselves what a GMO is and what it contains. Essentially, a GMO is a crop that has been modified to be more resistant than its unmodified counterpart. Improvement of desired traits has generally been undertaken through breeding, but normal breeding methods are slow and inaccurate. Genetic modification, on the other hand, can create plants with the desired trait very quickly and rarely fails. With the world's population rapidly increasing, GMOs may be the answer, but there are still issues pointed out by organizations like Forbes and Greenpeace, such as the safety factor, moral questions, and the outright cost of the process. . However, GMOs are already used on farms and can be found in almost every grocery store. GMO corn is the most abundant GMO crop, with 40 different types. Indeed, corn is America's most abundant crop and our entire economy depends on it. With genetically modified corn, it will become easier to mass produce corn. Different types of GMO corn can increase herbicide tolerance, pest resistance and nutrient availability. However, GMOs come with some drawbacks, such as health risks and economic concerns. Weeds are known to be a bad sign for both farmers and gardeners. Weeds absorb all the nutrients from the intended crop and prevent the plant intended to grow from growing. This is a very tedious and expensive task. For some mass-produced crops, such as corn, it is not cost-effective to control weeds by physical means, so farmers often spray large quantities of herbicides to kill weeds, which is also time consuming and expensive. Sometimes the herbicide is so strong that it ends up killing the plant as well. C...... middle of paper ...... the gap between the rich and the poor is growing further and creating an even bigger problem than the one it is trying to solve. This would be financially disastrous for farmers and third world countries who cannot afford to purchase genetically modified corn seeds each year to replenish their stocks. Genetically modified corn is, as you can see, the way forward and, at the moment, the only option. Data has proven that current claims about genetically modified corn, good and bad, are both justified. Over time, once these drawbacks are corrected, genetically modified corn could be the answer to our overpopulation, environmental and economic problems. It has been argued that genetic engineering represents the future and that we cannot afford to ignore a technology that has enormous potential benefits. With more time and research, perhaps the current flaws in the GMO plan will disappear and GMO corn will be accepted by everyone...
