  • Essay / Analysis of “Theseus's Habitual Letter Entries”

What he thinks is the right thing to do may seem like a positive aspect but can lead to complications if there are misunderstandings. Under entries ten to twelve, he illustrates Theseus' situation by assuming that his son seduces his wife. And because this is his conclusion, Theseus thinks the right thing to do is to banish his son. In theory, banishing his son wouldn't really improve the situation. The reason Theseus banishes his son is because he feels betrayed by him. But Theseus does not realize how much this affects Hippolyte. Hippolyte feels remorse because his own father does not want to believe what he says. Additionally, when her father dies in entry twelve, Hippolyte feels upset by her father's death and wishes to take his place. Theseus's sense of justice is more about what he thinks is the right thing to do rather than what should have been done, and this is what gets him into trouble. In Cat on a Hot Tin Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams, Maggie makes the same mistake when she says things she thinks are right. She makes an announcement to the family and says, “I have Brick’s child in my body” (Tennessee 169). Even though this announcement is a lie, she makes this announcement because she believes that because she has the baby, any inheritance from Big Daddy will go to her and Brick. She thinks she and Brick deserve the inheritance. Maggie thinks Mae and Gooper are doing it.
