Essay / Families quarrel in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
Two households, both alike in dignity, /In fair Verona, where we set our scene, /From old grudge to new mutiny, /Where the civil blood makes civil hands impure (Prologue, 1-4). reminiscent of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. As in this example, dignity does not affect or end the feud between two families. In the article titled “Families of Vendetta Victims Scream” published in the Turkish newspaper Daily News on April 9, 2008, two families are in the grip of a blood feud. The Ikilik family was protecting another family which was the enemy of the other family between which Ikilik had a controversy. In my further research, I also discovered that the Ikilik family had kidnapped a girl from the other family. After this event, the Ikilik family moved from Diyarbakır to Mersin, but this bloody feud continued them. Men from the other family killed five members of the Ikilik family. Additionally, this article contains some thoughts from other family members, so it is very effective. As the family stated, blood feuds do not end with a single death and most of the victims of these blood feuds are teenagers in the families. In my response, I will include the meaning and evaluation of the article as well as the connection to the themes of Romeo and Juliet. This article does not address a new issue but it contains groundbreaking information that makes people think and revise. this subject. This event between families occurred in 2008, in fact it is not old because blood feuds can last for decades with new generations of families. “People believe that their honor and power and that of the next generation will be eroded in society if they do not continue the vendetta and this incident is an example of that” (“Families of vendetta victims cry out”). 1) said Nilu. ..... middle of paper ...... is common in both Romeo and Juliet and the article. In both cases there is a family feud that has a vague beginning and the feud in the article started 15 years ago, but in the book the Montagues and Capulets have a family feud that is much more than that. In my opinion, the biggest similarity is that in both stories, people die because of these senseless quarrels and the families began to think wisely after losing their loved ones. As the Family Bickers article states: “The biggest victims are young people.” ("The families of the victims of the vendetta cry out", 1) This is also true of Romeo and Juliet. In cases of family disagreement, young people cannot say a word to judge, so quarrels affect their future lives and choices, like in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Family feuds cause loss and division in families and, as Michael J. Fox, a movie star, said, “Family is not an important thing. That's all.”
