  • Essay / Social Equity and Accountability in Human Resources...

There have been times when applicants and employees have been dishonest about their disabilities and need to be held accountable. The Equal Pay Act was created in 1963 to ensure that no matter whether an employee was male or female, both would be paid the same for the same work. When the law was created, women earned fifty-nine cents on the dollar compared to men (U.S. Department of Labor, nd, p. xx). Today, according to the Department of Labor, women earn eighty-one cents on the dollar compared to men (U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.). Unfortunately, we still have a problem with equal pay between men and women. My opinion on this is that society still views men as the breadwinners and demands a higher salary. If we want to make our nation a more socially equitable country, we must enforce equal pay law in our workforce. The human resource management functions that deal with the Equal Pay Act are the recruitment and development stages. During the hiring phase, managers must pay the same salary to any ideal candidate, male or female, who can perform the job most efficiently. In developmental stages such as promotions, managers must ensure that all employees, both male and female, receive the same amount of raise based on their work ethic. My belief regarding the Equal Pay Act is that any man or woman who can do the job should receive the same amount. The Civil Rights Act of 1964: Title VII is the law that prohibits practices of discrimination in employment based on race, religion, color, and sex (Title VII of the Civil Rights Act civilians of 1964). This applies to employers with 15 or more employees as well as public and private colleges.
