  • Essay / Military Advances in the United States - 19th Century - 828

During the 1800s in the United States there were many military advancements in the means of weapons and transportation. Starting with the weapons used in the early days of the United States, between approximately 1786 and 1833, they had the Model 1795 musket as their primary weapon; which they will thus appear used during the War of 1812 and also the Lewis and Clark expeditions. Approximately 80,000 of these weapons were built during their use. The Musket Model 1795 also had an effective range of around 50 to 200 yards and was better than its British equivalent, the Brown Bess, which had a range of 50 to 100 yards. Eventually, the United States then began producing more new weapons in 1833-50. they created an American Model 1842 musket. It was the first weapon manufactured in the United States with replaceable parts at Harpers Ferry and Springfield Armory. Approximately 275,000 of these muskets were manufactured during this period. Cannons were another weapon that the United States made its own version of. The cannon was first used in 1861 at Fort Sumter during the American Civil War. This was a major improvement in weaponry, as it could help clear out large crowds of men and prevent men from having to be on the front lines and risk being killed. Additionally, fights seemed to become faster due to his strength, but this also had some drawbacks. These disadvantages included very serious injuries to the men, and more men would be killed in the fighting, and eventually many cities were destroyed because of this. Now, on the military transportation side, there were still no transport trucks or helicopters, but what the military used for transportation were trains invented in 1822 by George Stephenson. Other means of transportation include ships which were invented in the late 18th century and horses were also a means of paper...or advances in military transportation, the United States would probably not be as strong as they are now.Bibliography- Brown Bess.
