Essay / Advantages and Disadvantages of Labeling Theory This theory is linked to the social action perspective. . The process of labeling includes deviance and crime, some acts are criminal because they have been labeled that way, these labels are created by the powerful in society, such as the government. Frank Tannenbaum (1893-1969) said that self-fulfilling prophecy could occur when a person was labeled a "criminal." Self-fulfilling prophecy is a prediction of something that then becomes a fact. If you have the label "delinquency" or "felony", the individual may have difficulty finding employment and therefore earn less money, which could lead them to return to crime. People in society will expect “criminals” to behave in a certain way. People with this label may have difficulty integrating into society. Moral panic is a definition given when a group of people is recognized as a threat to society's beliefs. Labeling theory has many benefits because it provides a reason why people with certain labels behave the way they do. It also attempts to understand how and why labeling has such a powerful impact on the rest of society. This theory also explains the behavior of certain people because they were labeled from a very young age. On the other hand, this theory has many weaknesses, as the upper class tends not to be labeled. This theory is therefore biased because it does not explain white-collar crime. If you are labeled as a delinquent, you are less likely to find employment and therefore may return to crime in order to support yourself. This theory does not explain why some people commit crime in... middle of paper ...... a 2013 paper published by the Equality and Human Rights Commission stated that in some areas In England and Wales, black people were 29 times more likely to be stopped and searched. Left realists want to reduce crime in society through more community-based improvements, such as reducing differences within communities by improving people's lives, giving communities a sense of connection, and avoiding resort to severe sanctions such as imprisonment. The advantages of left-wing realist theory are that it challenges Marxists' ideal view of crime. It also takes into account the victim's experiences and offers potential solutions. Additionally, it highlights the exploitation of young people and ethnic minority groups. However, the weakness of this theory is that the government is not willing to spend enough money to change poor areas, and there is no guarantee that it would work anyway..
