Mestre Pastinha was born as Vicente Ferreira Pastina in Salvador, on April 5, 1889 (p. 152). His mother, Mria Eugenia Ferreira, was a black woman from Bahia (p. 152). His father, a Spaniard called José Pastina, earned his living as a peddler (p. 152). Mestre Pastinha's introduction to capoeira was born from his need to defend himself (p. 152). At the age of ten, he was bullied by a bigger boy called Honorato from his neighborhood on Rua da Laranjeira (p. 152). Benedito, a native of Angola and an elderly African living on the same street after seeing his difficulties, offered to teach him a form of self-defense known as capoeira (p. 152). After training for a few months with Benedito, Mestre Pastinha managed to beat Honorato (p. 152). At age twelve, Mestre Pastinha became an apprentice at the Brazilian Navy School in Salvador (p. 152). After about eight years in the Navy, he left the Navy at the age of 20 (p. 153). He then earned his living through several jobs: cleaning shoes, selling newspapers, working as a carpenter or a casino bouncer (p. 153). Mestre Pastinha opened his first capoeira school in a bicycle workshop on Campo da Polvora (p. 153). During his twenties and thirties, Mestre Pastinha led the life of a typical capoeirista, surviving occasional work, participating in street rodas, and eventually playing tough (p. 153). Mestre Pastinha often remembered that he always carried a small sickle that could be mounted on the berimbau, transforming the instrument into a powerful weapon in case of street fighting (p. 154). Despite his initial fame, Pastinha withdrew from capoeira completely in later years (p. 154). According to his own writings, he retired from 1912 to 1941 (p. 154).
