  • Essay / Different personalities in Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

How far can you go to get lost? How far are we willing to travel to dim the glow of your own starlight? In Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, several characters have very different personalities. Or do they? Is Leo Borlock really different from Hillary Kimble? Don’t they both care about normalcy? For the attention of others? When Stargirl Caraway arrives, a moth engulfed by mist, the world has changed and seized the opportunity to latch onto something... divergent. An anomaly so far in their path they could barely reach it. So they start to hate it, the dead grass that grows but never quite touches the soft delicacy of Stargirl's petals. If something can't be understood, it's not good enough to be loved. This is how we were all raised; understand, discover and continue to reach for the answers as they flow through the cracks of our normality like water. Society stones her until the mountain is as low as the earth itself, and no one has to be jealous anymore. No one has to wonder how they could touch the docility of the gray clouds. No one has to wonder how far they have come to not be the only splash of color in a world of white. During the long journey of life, people are constantly admonished to follow their hearts, to be themselves, and to let our individuality run free. As Georg Simmel said: "The deepest problems of modern life arise from the individual's claim to preserve the autonomy and individuality of his existence in the face of overwhelming social forces, historical heritage, to external culture and life techniques." He is absolutely right. Every person, every mind and every heart has its own way of doing things. We have associated individuality with singularity...... middle of paper......constant battle with our hearts, which resist the forces of our instincts which reinforce a single cooperating human body In short, we seek only a feeling of true euphoria towards ourselves and consider. our world as an incorrect perfection. Perhaps, despite constant changes, our individuality is not completely renewed. Not renewed when trends change or when we lose interest in our old idols. minds are led to think as another would, our individualities only transform to adapt to this state. Change could quite possibly be the number one ingredient needed for the loss of uniqueness. Humans can adapt to different environments quite quickly, and that may be as much of a curse as a gift. People change themselves too quickly, sometimes, without worrying about the possibility of going against what they want, need, and love...
