Essay / Andragogy: The Cornerstone of Adult Education - 742
In the following essay, I will focus on the topic of andragogy and how it has always been the cornerstone of adult education. Andragogy, in a sense, leads you down the path of promoting individualism in learning and allowing each adult to find their own specific learning style. As we all know, not every individual will learn exactly the same thing as another. In the following essay, we will explore everything there is to know about andragogy. The long-standing debate over andragogy is whether adults and children learn differently and also whether or not they should be taught differently. To fully understand andragogy, one must research the different perspectives as I did. For centuries, it has been well known that adults learn every day, sometimes without even realizing that they are absorbing and retaining the information. It was not until the 20th century that the learning process was introduced into systematic study. The fundamental question arose: can an adult human being truly learn and retain knowledge or was the learning that was instilled as a child the peak of his learning abilities? . So, after the question was asked and research on the topic began, theories and findings also began to arrive. The tests were done much like testing older adults versus younger adults and the result of this particular test was that in fact the younger adults learned better than the older adults. This test proved insufficient because older people did not achieve the same type of education as younger people. The gap between the age difference and the new subjects learned made the test irrelevant. Intelligence tests developed around the same time as what we saw before young adults performed better than... middle of article... taking their criticism of the lack of focus and context in the education that takes place. In conclusion, my focus on Andragogy has given me information that I would never have known if I had not been interested in the subject. As an adult, I realize that motivation and interest in education is actually a huge factor in andragogy and I completely agree with the theory. The debates and criticisms on the subject may never go away and, in essence, I find this comforting because it shows that adult learning will not end. People are sufficiently interested and concerned in discussing the theory that it pushes the adult to become the adult learner that Andragogy presents to them. Thus, over the centuries before and centuries to come, due to the constant evolution of learning styles and adaptation to learning abilities, andragogy will continue to be a world-famous theory..
