    1. Name the six basic nutrients needed by the body. What is each of their anointings? What types of foods might you find them in? What are their benefits for the body? The human body needs 6 basic nutrients. These 6 are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, water, vitamins and minerals. Carbohydrates are divided into two main groups. Simple sugars and starches. Simple sugars contain fructose, glucose and lactose. All three sugars are found in most fruits. Starches are found in bread, rice, some fruits, some vegetables and potatoes. Carbohydrates are primarily responsible for providing energy to your body. However, in some cases where the body lacks sufficient fiber, carbohydrates can be broken down to replace fiber. Proteins are the building blocks of your body. Proteins are broken down into amino acids. These amino acids are used to build and repair muscles, hair, blood cells and certain hormones. Protein is also a good source of calories, which the body recognizes and uses to replace carbohydrates. Without protein, our body could not exist. Protein can be found in the protein foods group, which includes meats, eggs, nuts, beans, etc. Fats are used to help produce and absorb certain vitamins and hormones. In addition to this, fats “cushion” vital organs. Fats also serve to store calories, although this is not their main purpose. Fats can be found in butter, cheese, oil and most dairy products. Additionally, the body converts the extra calories into fat, hence why they are like calorie storage. Water is very important in your body. Water is responsible for carrying nutrients throughout your body, removing waste, controlling body temperature, and more.
