Essay / What is beauty? - 756
In today's American culture, society's view of beauty is controlled by Hollywood, where celebrities are constantly in the spotlight. The media follows Hollywood's every move and does not hesitate to ridicule the "stars" every time they dare to gain a few pounds or reveal an uncontrollable pimple. The media has created a grossly distorted mental image of what should be considered beautiful, and almost every girl of primary and secondary school age reads and watches this message, the idea has also been instilled in them. This view of beauty makes many adolescent girls obsessed with a very problematic and unattainable goal of perfection. Alexandra Scaturchio, in her article “Women in the Media” (2008), describes the media's idea of beauty as superficial. She supports her argument by placing two images side by side; a photo of a real, normal-looking woman and her photo after it has been severely digitally enhanced. Its goal is to show young teenage girls that the models they envy for their looks are not real people, but computer creations. She also states, "The media truly distorts the truth and instills in women this false hope because...they will live their lives without ever truly achieving that ideal appearance." Scaturchio wants his readers to realize the distorting capabilities of media and to feel beautiful about themselves, even with flaws. In addition to sowing false hope in the minds of easily persuaded young girls, this appalling vision of "beauty" burgeoning in Western cultures leads in shocking ways. to high rates of low self-esteem and eating disorders. In a national report on the state of self-esteem published by the Dove Self-Esteem Fund (June 2008), it was reported that a self-esteem crisis is plaguing the University.... . middle of paper ... ...a billion dollar beauty industry. She states that “scientific studies have proven that human beings are programmed to respond more positively to beautiful people.” She also cites a recent report published by the University of Bristol that Neanderthals wore "makeup" 50,000 years ago, all in the hope of attracting a mate with a chance of successfully reproducing (Zilhao 2009). Nevertheless, while we humans are somewhat inclined to seek beauty in our surroundings, modern standards have gotten out of control and completely unacceptable. As Confucius said: “Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it.” True beauty is not what is outside, but what is inside. America's youth must learn to differentiate between the two, and they will never know until something changes in the daily messages sent to them..
