  • Essay / The Power of Universal Education - 766

Time waits not for those who are not quick enough to follow it. For students to progress and succeed, they must learn and study when the time is right, not when they have already left school. For students to receive the same information, they must all adopt a universal education system. This would mean standard kindergarten through twelfth grade, then post-secondary education. A group of people proposed an additional year of school at the tax stakeholders' expense. The government does not agree and everyone should support it. There are too many variables in fifth grade that could affect students' futures. The government can't just afford to fund an extra year, students have enough time to learn everything in twelve years and since year thirteen was removed more and more students have moved into education postsecondary. Why shouldn't Canada benefit from universal education when the rest of the world does? “The Canadian government is facing one of the greatest financial crises in modern times. Everything is cut and reduced. Right now, the community cannot afford to waste taxpayer dollars. Salaries are frozen, people are being laid off and stress is at an all-time high. There is now a need for new and creative ways to make more money. At this stage, funding a fifth year is absolutely out of the question. The province has a debt of fifteen billion dollars and by reducing the fifth year we will save approximately twenty-two million dollars (CBC), thereby reducing the debt. The idea is that every dollar counts. There is a way to solve the financing problem. If students want to take an extra year, they can simply pay for it. Why spend taxpayer money on something that...... middle of paper... too. This will work for students who return for an additional year to reaffirm what they already know or expand on their knowledge. Forcing university-bound students to be a year behind all their out-of-province peers is unfair and creates unnecessary separation between them. The money saved by removing thirteenth grade can be used for extracurricular activities, helping the school and further improving the quality of a student's educational journey.
