  • Essay / Satire In Pierre Delacroix - 710

Pierre interprets whiteness in several different ways. The first thing that strikes you is the way Pierre speaks. He has this accent that he adapted to stand out from other African Americans. At one point in the film, his father even calls him out on his ridiculous accent and the need for him to stop. Another thing that Pierre changed about himself was his name. Pierre Delacroix is the name he had it changed to to make it appear to have a less “black” background. His original name, Perrless Dothan, did not fit the "white image" he was trying to portray. Peter also reinforces his image as a white man by dressing and acting as if he were white. He does his best to pretend that he has no "black" in him, at least at the beginning of the film. M. They do this because the whole movie is satirical from the start. Throughout the film, all the actors exaggerate everything and exaggerate what is happening in each scene. One of the main ways this film uses satire is through the television show it airs. In the series they have two characters Mantan and Sleep and Eat. These two play the role of a "dancing monkey" and a lazy black individual. The actors they cast are already black but they still wear blackface. They also reinforce the stereotype of black people having huge lips by putting lipstick on and around the lips to increase their size. This is all incredibly racist and offensive but makes the audience or America love this show. They even acted out the scenes in a way to add some humor to make the audience who were watching this movie, Bamboozled, laugh. When the TV show started, Pierre was given a small bank of toys. As the film progressed and the series became more and more successful, more and more dolls began to appear in the room. Then, when the movie started going bad, the piggy banks started going crazy. Slowly at first, then finally completely panicked. This drove Pierre crazy. Finally and at the end of the film Pierre had completely lost his mind when he was surrounded by all his black-faced dolls. This was all symbolic for Pierre who sold out to the television company and accepted his life as a "merry negro" after getting the first racist piggy bank as the series began to wear blackface when the anger surrounding the series reached its paroxysm. Another example of symbolism is when the cast of the TV show wore blackface even though they were already black. It showed that on television, black people are a joke, a joke to the point that they themselves should color their skin a shade blacker to show their separation from white people.
