Essay / Ethical Issues Surrounding Uber of scandals. Uber is a ride-sharing service, written by reporter Cathy Rainone of NBC4: "A customer requests a car using a smartphone app and Uber sends its nearest driver to their location, using the phone's GPS . The rate is billed directly to your credit card. The popular modern taxi company has been embroiled in unethical scandals, ranging from sabotaging other rideshare companies to sexually assaulting its drivers against its customers. What did Uber do about it? Not much. Uber executives seem to be telling the public what they want to hear, then turning a blind eye. Say no to plagiarism. The Times' Sam Frizell wrote that many Uber employees were calling rides from Lyft, waiting for the rides to get closer to them, then canceling them. This technique would cause low availability of Lyft drivers, waste gas, and then most likely allow customers to call Uber instead for a ride (Frizell). It was noted that Uber denies to the public that this tactic "plays a dirty role." » but how can they deny it? This ride-sharing company is deliberately trying to take down another company. The same Frizell explains how Lyft told CNNmoney that Uber employees called and canceled more than 5,000 rides. After this analysis, Uber's credibility has been damaged in my opinion. One way for them to regain their credibility would be to simply stop trying to ruin and steal another company's business. Sexual Assault Accusations of sexual assault by Uber drivers have been making headlines for some time now. The website Who's Driving Who explains that "Uber's driver onboarding process is dangerously sloppy...and Uber doesn't even bother to meet drivers in person before allowing them to transport passengers." This is the part that outrages me. Why would a multi-billion dollar company that can afford standard background checks on its employees allow these dangerous people to drive innocent customers around? Uber revealed that it had received 175 complaints of sexual assault (RT Question More). Uber has made numerous “false” claims since this information was leaked by one of its own customer service representatives. Basically, they claim that the data is misleading and that the system can treat it as a sexual assault complaint if someone says "Uber breached my wallet." A woman was raped by her Uber driver in India and CEO Travis Kalanick doesn't do much and explains that it's just a "growing pain" (Linshi). Why are the rapes of so many women simply a growing pain? Uber uses a company called Checkr to conduct background checks on potential employees, but Checkr is only seven years old. Uber believes it allows people to rehabilitate themselves, written by Tracey Lien of the Los Angeles Times. In my opinion, Uber allows some of its drivers to “rehabilitate” themselves at their customers’ expense. Keep in mind: this is just a sample. Get a personalized article from our expert writers now.
