    Emily Dickinson once wrote: “Much of the madness is most divine/sensible to the discerning eye. » This means that madness is really just a higher level of reason when considered by the wise. In As I Lay Dying, William Faulkner uses different mental illnesses to explain many of the character's actions and decisions throughout his journey. The character considered the craziest by many is Darl. Darl is an all-knowing or all-knowing narrator and this is considered insanity when it is first written in the book. When the final result is revealed, it becomes clear that Darl was the smartest of all the Bundren. Darl's madness allows the reader to uncover his family members' secrets and ultimately reveals that Darl is normal and is able to see the irony in his family members' actions and feelings.
