    They struggle in prison and bring about meaningful change in themselves, both during incarceration and after release. The majority of incarcerated people will be released into society, which means society must work together to help them recover and rehabilitate. Many prisoners are released after serving only two-thirds of their sentence. Many entered prison with little or no work experience, education and dependencies. They have a history of childhood abuse/neglect, and most come from impoverished backgrounds, mental health issues, and negative peer influences. (change.org, 2015) Most people are involved in gangs only to feel a sense of belonging and identity that is missing from their home life. Many are incarcerated hundreds of miles from their families, with few opportunities to maintain relationships. After living for many years in a negative, controlled and structured environment, it is extremely difficult for prisoners to re-enter society. Instead of learning to reform their thinking/behavior and change their lifestyle, many offenders adopt dangerous behaviors in order to adapt to a toxic prison culture of violence, gang activity, and idleness. (change.org, 2015) This same behavior they adapt to in prison, they bring out once they are released. Non-violent criminals become violent
