Essay / The negative effects of video game violence in Grand Theft Auto include murder, robbery, shooting, and sexual acts. Many people, mostly older parents, believe that games can desensitize these things, making them easier to do in real life. Douglas Gentile says that repeated exposure to anything will lead to desensitization (Gentile). However, video game violence is completely different from real-life violence. Most of the violent acts on Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty make me think it wouldn't happen in real life. I get used to it in the game from repeated exposure, but I would never even think about doing these things in real life. Killing in games is a completely different feeling than hurting someone in real life. What Gentile is saying is that no matter what you are exposed to, you will become desensitized to it. You may become insensitive to certain foods that you overeat or to words that are used repeatedly in movies. You will therefore become insensitive to the violence of video games, but not to real life.
