Essay / Why me? - 1023
Inequalities based on age are quite widespread on our planet today. Some people tend to base their actions and decisions on a person's age, whether they are young or old. This discrimination, called ageism, consists of stereotyping people based on their age. This appears in many ways, from unspoken assumptions to cruel accusations; neglect the skills and experience of the employer. Age stereotypes remain a serious problem in our society, particularly in the workplace. To help reduce this discrimination, people should better understand each other and fully understand their environment. Age discrimination prevents older people from finding employment because of their age. According to AARP, a nonprofit organization that helps seniors, says it is not illegal to discriminate against people because they are too young; however, those under 40 are not protected. Older people are obviously more likely to have been with a company longer than younger people. They are therefore more likely to hold higher positions with higher pay. It is more difficult for older people to find new jobs. Once they find a new job, they must start with the lowest salary. The manager often realizes that an older person simply cannot make a long-term commitment to the company and may also miss more due to health problems. Another reason why an employer does not hire an older person is the evolution of technology. Seniors lack knowledge about high-tech fields in new industries (“Age Discrimination Workplace”). In 1982, the median age of the working population was 34.6 years, compared to more than 40 years today. Increasingly, the U.S. labor pool will be comprised of individuals covered by the ADEA.
