Vaccines Should Be CompulsoryIn the late 18th century, smallpox became a deadly epidemic and Dr. Edward Jenner knew something had to be done. He created the smallpox vaccine, which allowed vaccines to become a public health practice. With today's medical advances, vaccines have become a much safer and more reliable way to prevent many diseases that once killed thousands and parents should be required to vaccinate their children to protect them and those those around them, unless existing health problems prevent it. Vaccines have protected people for thousands of years against diseases that, when they become epidemics, kill or paralyze thousands. Vaccines have been designed to act like the immune system, meaning that the vaccine contains disease components that have been modified to such an extent that they can no longer harm the child, which then allows the body to of the child to create a barrier against illness. prevent them from contracting the disease again, without risking fatal consequences linked to the disease (“General information on how vaccines work”). Smallpox is an example of a very common scourge among young children and was a rapidly spreading disease that affected their immune systems. The first battle against this disease is said to date back to 1000 AD, when the Chinese used elements of the smallpox virus to combat the disease, which later led to other countries like Turkey and the Americas to do the same (“Timelines – History of vaccines”). This became the basis on which other people built and improved vaccines on which they quickly took off and became a fast trend around the world.
