Essay / Technology Ethics in the Classroom - 707
Technology in the classroom is important to facilitate the learning process; however, this creates new challenges for teachers. Teachers are now required to educate students about the importance of technology ethics. Computer ethics refers to the moral guidelines that govern the use of computers and networks (Shelly, G, Gunter, G and Gunter, R 2012). Classroom ethics also requires teachers to explain what plagiarism is and the appropriate way for students to give credit to information obtained from another source. Teachers should also have a plan in place to ensure Internet security, develop a student use agreement, and discuss ethical practices when using technology in the classroom. Internet security is important to keep students safe and to protect the school computer. network. A firewall is useful for protecting the school's computer network. A firewall restricts access to data on a network (Shelly, G, Gunter, G and Gunter, R 2012). There are many firewall programs such as Norton and McAfee. Teachers can also promote Internet safety by establishing clear guidelines on what a website is likely to be visited. Teachers can also check students' computer history to determine what content students are viewing. Teachers and parents can also use filtering software to block unacceptable content. Teachers should encourage their students to practice Internet safety at all times. It is important for students to continue practicing safety behaviors so that Internet safety becomes a habit (Yoon, C, Hwang, J, & Kim, R, 2012). Teachers should also take the time to walk around the classroom and observe what students are doing when using technology in the classroom. T...... middle of paper...... between computers. Filtering software will ensure that students access school-related material. The teacher also has the task of teaching students the importance of copyright laws and plagiarism. Teachers have the daunting task of teaching students not only the assigned curriculum, but also the life skills needed to stay safe while using all the new technology at their disposal.
