  • Essay / Community Oriented Policing: Is It Really Effective for...

Throughout the history of law enforcement, different models have been introduced and implemented with the aim of reducing and deterring crime. The most popular model today is community policing. Community policing has been defined in many ways and can be described using a variety of different programs and services. Although there is no general idea of what community policing is, all who practice this model share the same underlying principle of bringing the community and police together around criminal and social issues in areas. affected neighborhoods (Oliver, 1998). Although this model of policing has become more popular than the traditional model and has evolved since its origins, its effectiveness is still the subject of much debate. By reviewing other academic work on community policing, I hope to determine whether or not it is effective in reducing crime and whether it is effective in agency investigative practices. If it is effective, I would like to determine if it is universally effective or if it only reduces a specific type of crime. If the research does not prove the effectiveness of the model, I would like to identify why it is not effective and find possible solutions to make it more effective. In some cases, the implementation of the community policing model has been successful. In other cases, the results were not as conclusive. A study conducted in Texas focused on the effects of community policing on crime rates and crime solving within Texas police departments. The researcher observed the violent crime rate, property crime rate, total crime rate, clearance rate, and total crime rate to measure the effectiveness of police efforts.
