  • Essay / Ethical Dilemmas During a Pandemic - 1862

Florence Nightingale once said: "Apprehension, uncertainty, expectation, expectation, fear of surprise do more harm to the patient than no matter what effort.โ€ Nurses face ethical dilemmas every day when caring for patients and their families and when working in a multidisciplinary environment. Many ethical dilemmas faced by a nurse are often difficult to resolve, often leading to nurses refusing to provide care due to their conflicting values, those of patients, the values โ€‹โ€‹of the employer, and the expectations of their employees. It is essential that nurses recognize this dilemma and resolve it without delay to avoid compromise to the patient's care and well-being. But it is not always an easy solution, as in the case study of a physiotherapist nurse and her ethical dilemma during the H1N1 influenza pandemic in Ontario (CNA, August 2008). Ontarians had only one thing on their minds in April 2009... influenza A. virus subtype H1N1 or swine flu. On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the existence of a global pandemic, with over 8,000 confirmed cases in Ontario alone and 95 confirmed deaths as of November 26, 2009 (Wikipedia, 2011 ). A pandemic is an astonishing event that sometimes requires nurses to go above and beyond their duty to provide care to their sick patients. As part of their duty to provide care, many nurses faced ethical dilemmas, as in the case of the physiotherapist nurse who was ambivalent between her need to work to obtain financial means, her responsibility to her patient and her employer, and her uncertainties about her potential to become infected and then pass the disease on to her children. The PT nurse cared for many patients infected with the H1N1 virus, but the most memorable was a four-year-old girl named CR. CR was brought to the emergency room by her parents in July 2009.
