Essay / Foodcorp Simulation Reflection Paper - 1407
Foodcorp Simulation Reflection PaperThe Foodcorp simulation was a great exercise for this class. It was a fun activity. I felt that the materials and situations reflected real organizational experiences. There were thirteen roles with different responsibilities in the simulation. These roles create structure for the organization. For example, these roles create three levels of hierarchy, two product groups; frozen foods and dry foods, as well as subsidiaries. I played the roles of Senior Vice President of Frozen Foods, Vice President of Production, and Vice President of Frozen Food Sales and Marketing. For these roles, I had direct responsibility for improving problematic situations in the frozen food department. Our group members also helped each other come up with ideas for solving problems. Foodcorp is a large organization with over twenty thousand employees. The structure should help the organization achieve established goals and objectives. Therefore, proper structural design is crucial. Organizational performance and efficiency can be improved through specialization and appropriate division of labor. Foodcorp used a matrix structure, but Foodcorp's management style seemed to be that of a single boss. Information and decisions come directly from the top. As we can see from the chart, group members primarily report and communicate with the president. In my opinion, this style will work best in a simple organization, but not for a large organization like Foodcorp. If it relies too much on the president, employees might face many problems such as delays and poor decisions. Finally, Foodcorp could suffer from its structure. Middle of my paper......I really enjoyed the simulation. On the day of the simulation, I have the opportunity to strengthen my team skills. Although I sometimes still lack the confidence to express myself due to my English skills, I think I have improved my confidence to a certain level. As I can notice that I am more willing to share the ideas on the activities of this course than the previous courses. Additionally, I learned from this simulation that there is no need to have only one good choice for ideas. Different people have different ideas depending on their point of view. Therefore, there may be many solutions to a problem, but one only needs to select the best choice; we must take into account many factors and majority opinions. Simulation also allows me to understand how real organizations work. It is impossible to effectively manage organizations without understanding the four frameworks.
